Why Everything We Sell Is Made to Order

We could hold stock. We choose not to, and it's not a marketing decision. It's about what happens to a painted shell while it sits.

We don’t keep a warehouse of finished figures, and people occasionally read that as artificial scarcity. It isn’t. It’s what happens when you make a painted shell instead of a moulded plastic object, and you’d rather not send out stock that’s been sitting.

What sitting actually does

Fiberglass continues to cure for a while after it comes out of the mould. That’s fine, and it’s part of why a fresh shell is slightly more forgiving of small knocks than an old one. Paint is the opposite: paint is at its best shortly after it’s applied and sealed, and from there it’s a slow curve downward. Dust gets into the texture. A carton gets moved twice and something rubs. A batch that sat through a humid summer is not the same as a batch that shipped in week two.

Holding stock also means guessing. Guess wrong on which characters people want and you end up with a shelf of slow movers, which is when studios start discounting, and discounting a hand-painted piece is a bad signal to send about the work.

What it means for your wait

Your piece starts when you order it. That means the shell is fresh, the paint is fresh, and the colourway is the current one rather than whatever we were mixing eight months ago. It also means small variations are normal and expected, which we wrote about separately in Two Copies Are Never Identical.

The honest downside is the wait. Casting and painting aren’t processes that speed up cleanly. Rushing cure times is the fastest way to put a soft shell into a box, and a soft shell flexes in transit. We’d rather tell you it takes what it takes.

Why it’s worth it

You get a piece that hasn’t been standing in a corner accumulating micro-damage, and you get the current finish rather than an older one. For an object at this price and this size, that trade seems obvious to us. If you’d rather have something tomorrow, we’re not the right studio for that purchase, and that’s fine too.

The workwear characters tend to be the ones people order after reading this, and Sage Workwear Panda is usually the first one they look at.
